Keeping Baby Protected
Buying a new baby bulldog is a big responsibility. Until they are fully vaccinated against Parvo, Distemper, Bordatella (Kennel Cough), and a host of other nasty virus’ out there, the only way to keep them safe is to pad train them indoors. Puppies need three sets of shots before they are fully protected and shots can be spaced apart up to six weeks depending on your vet’s preferences. This means if you’re puppy has one set of shots when you buy them you’re looking at a month of pad training inside the house.
Winter time is the dangerous kennel cough season although puppies can get this cough anytime of year, it seems to be more prevalent in colder weather. It can quickly turn into pneumonia so keeping a puppy vaccinated is vital to their health and survival. Spring and Summer are the Parvo months but puppies can also get this deadly virus that attacks their intestines any time of year. Treat your new puppy like a new human baby. Limit who touches your baby and what they are exposed to until their delicate immune system has had a chance to fully develop.
Fortify a puppy with a good vitamin at three months old so they get the added boost of protection after their natural immunity from their mother is gone. When taking your puppy to the vet hold them in your arms and don’t put them on the floor. People bring sick animals to the vet and your new puppy who hasn’t had the benefit of all their shots might pick up whatever virus is lurking around the office. Take along a potty pad to put between the exam table or scale and your puppy so that nothing touches them. Ask techs and vets to wear surgical gloves. Remember they don’t know if your puppy has had all their shots but you know, so protect your baby.
There is a difference between paranoia and caution and being careful is your right as the new puppy parent. The bottom line is you are the one who needs to make sure that your new puppy is healthy and stays that way. Keep them safe and indoors until they have had all three sets of baby shots. Its the best way to make sure they don’t ever have to go through being sick.
