Bulldog Snoring is no laughing matter...
Snoring bulldogs may sound and look funny – but it’s not a laughing matter. This can be a life threatening condition and if it’s not corrected you could cut short your bulldogs life.
Brachycephalic syndrome is a dangerous condition caused by stenotic nares and an elongated soft palate. This syndrome affects not just English Bulldogs but also Boxers, Boston Terriers, Pekingese, Pugs, Lhasa Apsos, Shih Tzus and Bull Mastiffs, to name a few.
The Red Rocks Animal Center in Lakewood Colorado performs this corrective surgery: nasoplasty and soft palate shortening: all for the low price of $480. Red Rocks Animal Center did the palate trims on my Ruger, Darla and Nipey. Nipsey had so much extra skin in the back of his throat that when you opened his mouth you couldn’t even see down his trachea at all. Before the surgery he could only breathe through his nose. In most cases the surgery can be done same day and you can take your bulldog home to recover.
If you’re bulldog is snoring loudly when he or she sleeps, or having problems eating, it might be worth getting a consultation with your vet. We had this surgery performed for our Tank when he was about 18 months old and it changed his life. He could breathe better, didn’t sleep as much, he ran like a puppy for the first time in ages and ate better too. I’m sure it extended his life and I’ll always be grateful we did it for him.
Before doing this or any other surgery on your dog always get a second opinion and make sure the benefit of the procedure outweighs the risk of anesthesia. This is not something every English Bulldog needs, it’s only if they have a medical issue that it’s necessary. Tank was actually vomiting when he ate and choking on his food so he definitely needed the surgery done because he was at risk for aspiration pneumonia from his condition. Dr. Tom Geiselhardt performed the palate trim on Tank at Homestead Animal Hospital in Centennial. Weigh the pros and cons very carefully before going forward with any surgery on your bulldog.
