Bulldogs are as healthy as any other breed

Many people, even beloved vets, give bulldogs a bad reputation. It isn’t fair either. Coming from a bulldog lover and owner of eight in my lifetime, I can testify that my dogs are healthy and happy pups and it’s not because I’m lucky. It’s because I know how to care for them and do it well. Vets see sick dogs all the time and tend to judge a breed based on what they see. To say one breed is more problematic than another based on the patients they see is not only unfair it’s unethical. That would be like saying all people are unhealthy if you’re a doctor of internal medicine. Of course you’re going to see sick people you’re a doctor! That doesn’t mean all people are sick. Healthy dogs don’t visit the vet while healthy people don’t go to the doctor. So saying ALL bulldogs are a problem based on seeing them in their office is a ridiculous statement since they don’t see the healthy ones. Simple logic right? So why do Bulldogs get this bad rap? Well they need their faces washed, nails trimmed, to be taken for walks, fed a good food, be kept away from table scraps, kept out of the hot sun so they don’t get heat stroke and loved and kissed. I think that pretty much describes every animal don’t you? It’s because people who have problems with a dog let everyone know about it. It’s a fact that when someone has a bad experience they tell 10 people on average. When someone has a good experience they tell two. By the law of statistics people who complain and have bad experiences make the most noise about it. While people who are happy and satisfied keep to themselves.

The fact of the matter is you get out of something what you put into it. That is true in life or true when you own animals or even have children. Taking care of what you love and putting time into that endeavor will reap rewards and sometimes no matter what you do God has other plans. We can’t control everything but I know that my bulldogs are no more trouble than any other breed. They are comical, lovable babies that want nothing more than to be with you. Any person who makes a generalized statement about any certain breed isn’t being fair. Doxies are notorious for back issues and my wiener dog flew off the couch like Superman and never hurt herself. Every breed has their quirky things people need to be aware of but taking good care of them and being aware of their limits and listening to people who know how to advise you properly will help you have a long healthy life with your bully or any other dog you own. Be careful who you listen to, even medical experts, and know that you are entitled to your own opinions. Bulldogs are not more work than any other type of dog. I know. I’ve owned them and cared for them for many years.

I do recommend you either invest in pet insurance for your bulldog or start a savings account for the same amount you’d pay an insurance company. That way any issues that come up are covered. Do your research on pet insurance, some cover more than others and deductibles can be quite high depending on how much you want to pay per month. One MRI test with a neurologist is $3500 so it’s worth getting some kind of protection.
