Basic Training

It’s important to establish the rules with your new bulldog early right when you bring home a puppy. Bulldogs are so smart and ready to make you proud of them! Teaching a dog basic commands is very important. Stay, sit, leave it, lay down, shake hands, it can all be as simple as sitting on the floor with them with a small bag of treats and getting their full attention. I like to use Zukes treats because they are tiny and you can break them in half since they are soft. My dogs liked the peanut butter and the chicken ones. I also love the basic puppy training classes Petsmart offers. Your puppy can learn the commands that dogs need to begin with and they also learn who is alpha and the boss of them! They learn to get along with other dogs too. That’s so vital to having a good pet and a wonderful relationship with others. There’s nothing more unsettling than having a dog that is unfriendly to others and one that you have to worry about all the time. Exposing them to other dogs and keeping that door open for them so they can be well socialized is vital to having a happy dog. It takes some effort but there are few things in life that don’t. That first year of growth includes training for your puppy.

When I went to Pestmart training with Tank, my first bulldog, it was hilarious because he got the commands immediately. All the other dogs were struggling to learn and finally the trainer told the class to just watch the bulldog. He could sit, laydown, leave it and shake in under fifteen minutes. Bulldogs are SMART. Well, lets be honest here, Tank would literally do ANYTHING for a treat. He did graduate with honors though. If you want to go on and train for competition with AKC those classes are available too. Your puppy can take the class from 10 weeks to five months old. It’s a six week introductory for basic skills, communication and socialization. They give you tips for barking and nipping too. These trainers are the gurus. After the puppy basics you can go on to other levels of training with Petsmart. Whatever you choose to do helping your bulldog learn to obey you is something you will value in years to come. I know we did!
