Springtime is here!
Springtime can be a wonderful time for dogs, offering time outside, warmer weather, and the chance to enjoy outdoor activities, but it also presents some potential hazards like allergies, parasites, exposure to certain plants and heat stroke.
Pollen and other allergens like lawn care chemicals can cause skin irritation, itching, and other allergic reactions in dogs. Look for excessive scratching, licking, chewing or biting at the skin, especially on paws, ears and face. Consult your vet for a diagnosis and treatment option if you see any of these things. You might need to give your fuzzy kid some allergy medication, use a special shampoo or have them get an allergy shot.
Fleas, ticks and other parasites are more active in Spring. Make sure your baby is on a year round preventative for heart worm, fleas and ticks. Many flowers and plants are toxic to dogs, so be cautious about what they might ingest or chew on. Some toxic flowers are hyacinths, tulips, daffodils, and certain lilies. These can upset their stomach or even cause more serious problems. Choose pet-safe plants for your garden and be aware of potential hazards in your yard or during walks.
As temperatures rise please be mindful of heatstroke. Bulldogs can overheat easily even sunning themselves on the back deck at your home. Only let them do this for a few minutes in the cool of the morning or evening, never in the heat of the day. Overheating will swell their throat which is already smaller than the normal dog's trachea and prevent them from breathing.
Provide plenty of water for them when it's hot, avoid exercising or taking them for walks unless it is in the cool of the morning or evening. Never in the hottest part of the day. Remember bulldogs are indoor dogs and do best inside in air conditioning. They like going outside but limit their time when it's hot out there. Enjoy spring and be safe!
